A-HED Tutorial Series

This series demonstrates a variety of scenarios where A-HED can  be used to monitor and answer specific clinical quality and operational efficiency questions in your organisation, taking you through how you would do this step-by-step. We suggest first watching the short videos (approx. 2-3 mins each), then downloading the corresponding user guides for reference.

1. Introduction to A-HED

Scenario/s Covered:
"I have one min - what areas are our strength and where can we improve?" "I want to know if performance drops below 80% on this KPI."

A-HED Reporting Module:
HEDlines Indicators & Alerts

Key Learning:
- Interpret HEDlines - indicator summary list, cross & key messages.
- Find methodology details for indicators.
- Print/export information into PDF.
- Create automated alerts.


2. Monitoring Mortality

Scenario/s Covered:
"How much variation in mortality is there between hospitals in our State?"

A-HED Reporting Module:
1.1 Standardised Mortality Ratio

Key Learning:
- Filter report to show only hospitals in your State.
- Compare mortality ratios between multiple hospitals in a chart.
- View performance over time.
- Find out an organisation's actual name.


3. Clinical Service Redesign - LOS

Scenario/s Covered:
"I needed Australia-wide data to evaluate new clinical pathways and publish our LOS improvements for elective hip and knee surgery patients…"

A-HED Reporting Module:
2.1 Length of Stay

Key Learning:
- Filter report based on time period, organisation, admission method & specific DRGs.
- Select average LOS ("Total Episode Duration") as a measure & view performance over time.
- Change time series to view by quarter or year.


4. Investigating Complications

Scenario/s Covered:
"What are the most frequently occurring complications in health services?"

A-HED Reporting Module:
3.1 Complications Rate & Analysis (CHADx)

Key Learning:
- Filter report to a specific time period & show all Health Roundtable hospitals.
- Interpret a tree (box) map to identify most frequently occurring complications (& resulting excess bed days).
- Find report for analysing numbers/rates for specific complications.


5. Business Cases - Readmissions

Scenario/s Covered:
"I must include readmission rates in my business case for COAD service redesign…"

A-HED Reporting Module:
1.2 Emergency Readmissions (28 days)

Key Learning:
- Filter report by DRG.
- Select organisation & view readmissions performance over time.
- Create a PDF showing charts.
- View information in a data table & change row headings.
- View episode level details.
- Download information into Excel.


6. Research - Episode Numbers

Scenario/s Covered:
"Do we have enough cases to participate in this clinical trial?"

A-HED Reporting Module:
4.1 Activity & Notional Revenue

Key Learning:
- Select "Inpatient activity (no. of episodes)" as measure displayed in charts on tab 1.
- Filter report by: time period, organisation, age, sex & multiple diagnosis codes.
- Use "zoom bars" on bar chart to make bars larger.
- Change row, column headings & information (measures) shown in data table.


7. Consultant Appraisals - LOS

"Where can I find LOS for Consultant Appraisals?"
