The theme of the workshop is “we only get one chance to get it right”.  This year the End of Life Care Improvement Group will share data and stories about caring for individuals and families at the end of life; and the importance of the consumer experience, respecting patients choice and implications for clinicians.

The End of Life Care Improvement Group meeting is an excellent forum for discussion and a great opportunity to hear from leading experts in the field and share innovations from our membership. We hope you can join this growing group and share your wisdom as well as gaining new knowledge from your peers. The healthcare that patients receive in the last year, months and weeks of their lives can help minimise the distress and grief associated with death and dying for the individual, and for the family, friends and carers. Many patients spend much of their last year of life going in and out of hospital and more than half of those who die each year do so in acute hospitals.
Delegates will share issues, practices and good ideas to develop action plans over the two days for implementation in their service.  The 2017 End of Life Care reports will be available on the website by the 15th June.

Keynote Speakers

Dr Jim Howe FRCP(Lon), FRACP
Graduated from Queens University Belfast in 1970. Completed training in Neurology and Geriatrics in Newcastle upon Tyne and Leeds, and was a consultant at Airedale General Hospital in North and West Yorkshire for 23 years before emigrating to Melbourne in 2006.
He is currently working part time at The Statewide Progressive Neurological Disease Service Victoria, based at Bethlehem Hospital. This service provides comprehensive secondary consultation and care for nearly everyone with Motor Neurone Disease in Victoria, and some people living in nearby NSW, SA and Tasmania (usually around 260 outpatients are supported at any time).  There is also a large Huntington’s Disease service. Smaller numbers of people with other progressive diseases are cared for, including those living with MSA, PSP, SCA, Muscular Dystrophies and Mitochondrial cytopathies. The service is active in research, including international and Australian multicentre treatment trials, neuropsychological and allied health research.

Mrs Carol Clymo
Carol has worked professionally within the aged care and child care industries for over 30 years.
Her professional experience and observations of both these industries has brought her intimately  closer to the health services sector, providing for a greater understanding of the restrictions and difficulties in providing respectful, loving, and legal solutions for appropriate end of life care.
During this time period she had privately transitioned into the area of end of life care for various family members. Parents-in-law, parents and her husband have all personally progressed with her along their journeys of end of life care.
Carol has worked with various groups in Australia and overseas to identify and source best practices in end of life care.
