“The Health Roundtable and A-HED online analytics solution assisted our orthopaedic unit in benchmarking our length of stay performance with exemplar health services nationally. The data was a key driver for our project where we successfully reduced our length of stay through implementing sustainable changes to patient management and our service provision.”

Australasian Healthcare Evaluation Data (A-HED) is an online solution enabling healthcare organisations to measure, compare and understand clinical performance, in order to improve patient care and deliver financial savings.

A-HED’s interactive and intuitive interface, offering a range of graphical visualisations, makes it easy to use and interpret for healthcare professionals from the Board to the ward. This is best appreciated with a live system demonstration.

The reports are updated monthly by a dedicated quality support team, providing relevant, timely and robust data.

The A-HED Approach

A-HED has been developed in partnership by the Health Roundtable, a non-profit members organisation which aims to drive innovation and best practice in healthcare,  and University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. The team is comprised of healthcare analysts and managers from statistical, epidemiological, health informatics and IT  backgrounds, with clinician engagement.

A-HED incorporates national and internationally used  measures of clinical quality and efficiency, adapted by the Health Roundtable to fit the Australasian setting. The system has been developed and continuously evolves through consultation with the community of current  subscribers, in order to ensure it provides high quality and clinically relevant analytics.

Launched in 2010, the HED system is used in over 50 health organisations across the UK. Following the successful Australian pilot in 2014, A-HED is now in use at 16 Australasian hospitals.

“HED allowed me to see the changes in readmissions over time, essentially mirroring the external healthcare environment. The ability to separate out wards, departments and DRGs allowed me to see which factors were important. It was amazing when we discovered that the introduction of an emergency department short stay ward was the greatest influence on our readmission rates. We could determine that it was not about quality of care, but how we count admissions and readmissions.”

Dr Sara Thorn – Senior Medical Officer, Princess Alexandra Hospital

“The A-HED tool has been incredibly valuable in helping our project team access timely patient level data to enhance the management of patients with Chronic Heart Failure. The ability to use the tools filters to tailor data to our specific needs has been instrumental. The A-HED and Health Roundtable team have been easily accessible to answer any questions or queries we had, and provided myself and my team with the support we needed to get the most out of the tool. We look forward to continuing to use the tool to improve how we care for our patients.”
