In-Hospital Mortality Comparison Reports

In-Hospital Mortality Report Suite

The 2020 In-Hospital Mortality Report compares your hospital’s mortality rate to those of your peers, using a detailed risk adjustment methodology.

This report is one of the first that Hospital and Health Service Executives should review in order to monitor trends in patient outcomes and ensure they continue to provide safe patient care to their community.

Our invaluable report provides a quick and easy insight into your mortality trends, allowing you to monitor your risk adjusted mortality rate at your hospital’s governance meetings and importantly identify where you might be an outlier.

We benchmark your mortality against Australian and New Zealand peers using our Admitted Patient Mortality Risk model (AP-MortR), to calculate an expected number of deaths which is then compared to the actual number of deaths at your hospital in a given time period.

The accompanying departmental mortality reports provide a useful way to disseminate results at a departmental level. Each department and subunit is monitored using Exponentially Weighted Moving Average (EWMA) charts, rebased against peer mortality rates.

We also provide a separate report with your results for the CHBOI mortality indicators developed by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (ACSQHC) using Health Roundtable reference data.

All reports are updated quarterly or monthly depending on subscription level.

Our approach is consistent with that used by governments in England, Canada and Australia, but has been enhanced to make better use of the extensive collection of detailed diagnosis information submitted by our members. All models are trained on a multi-year database of our own member hospitals.

Specifically, the 2020 In-Hospital Mortality Report Suite includes:

  1. Mortality Executive Summary Overview
  2. Mortality Deidentified Peer Analysis
  3. Mortality Breakdown by Admission Type
  4. Extensive Mortality Analysis by Diagnosis
  5. Unrivalled Mortality Analysis by Hospital Department
  6. Mortality Trend Analysis
  7. Detailed Drill Down Functionalities via interactive workbooks

Our mortality analysis is based on a period of data containing over 9 million episodes and around 100 thousand deaths.
