Changes to Care Improve Post-Partum Haemorrhage (PPH) Rates at West Gippsland

A high incidence of PPH was noted at West Gippsland.

To improve their performance a number of solutions were implemented, including:
• Patients with high risk indicators were to be given Syntometrine.
• Acknowledge that 2/3 of PPH cases occur where there are NO risk factors
• When risk factors exist get IV access and full blood exam early in labour
• Blood loss documentation post Caesarean Section had been automatically recorded as 500mLs+, not based on actual output in theatre. This was significantly contributing to our increase in PPH rates
• Use ergometrine in Emergency Caesarean Sections
• PPH management equipment and education reviewed and updated

As a result, PPH is now being treated proactively and the rate of post partum haemorrhage incidence has decreased.
