Strategies for Addressing Lengthy Waiting Lists at Logan Hospital Reduces Wait Times for Endoscopies
At Logan Hospital demand exceeded the available capacity for both gastroenterology (GI) outpatient consultative service and endoscopy procedures, which resulted in extended wait times and potentially contributed to adverse outcomes.
A multi-tiered solution was implemented and included:
• Alignment and standardisation of triaging of new referrals
• Clinical and administrative audit of the GI and endoscopy waiting lists
• Introduction of alternate and additional pathways to endoscopy – including a Nurse led Endoscopy Assessment
• Maximising available capacity
As a result, mean procedures per month have increased from ~200 to ~400 per month and “Long Wait Outpatients” has decreased from a high of 70% to 25%.
