Compassion fatigue poses risks to patient safety, the organization (sick leave and attrition) and to staff mental health. Additionally, at Princess Alexandra Hospital (PAH) 3 staff progressed to post-traumatic work related stress disorder (PTSD).

In an effort to address the above issues PAH hosted an 8hr day “Compassion Café” that focussed on issues:
• Within the Workplace - Culture of the Team and Connections with Patients and Families
• Outside the Workplace - Life Experiences and Factors in Home and Social Life

After attending the session 93% of staff reported the Compassion Café session was Helpful or Very Helpful
