Canberra Hospital Improves Peripartum Patient Blood Management

Author: Sarah Brandt | Posted: 6/07/2016 | Views: 874
Canberra Hospital’s audit of 434 cases of postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) showed 12% presented prior to delivery anaemic. Subsequently 59% of these women received a transfusion, representing 31% of all transfusions.

In an effort to improve detection of anaemia during pregnancy a comprehensive patient and provider education initiative that included algorithms for care was deployed.

As a result Canberra Hospital reports:
• Improved antenatal iron detection and treatment
• Increased IV iron use leading to reduced transfusions
• Lowered rates of anaemia at delivery
• Education materials were well received by patients
