Consumers at the Forefront: Using Consumer Groups to Influence Mental Health Care at Barwon

Author: Sarah Brandt | Posted: 21/06/2016 | Views: 761

Barwon was facing changes to their service delivery model and also was experiencing much resistance to change from staff. Additionally, there was little consumer involvement in mental health services.

To rectify the above issues, Barwon established a large consumer group at Barwon to provide feedback and input to Barwon’s mental health teams.

As a result:
• An open dialogue between consumers, carers and staff was created
• Solutions are consumer and carer focused
• All future developments are developed by co design (consumer and staff in combination)
• Future improvements include expansion of consumer and carer resources and development of a peer support workforce
