Decision Tool for Gestational Diabetes Mellitus Offers Improved Care to Women at the RBWH

Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH) determined that with the implementation of IADPSG* criteria demand for medical services would increase making its current clinic model inadequate.

To remedy their above concerns RBWH designed a new model of care and developed a decision support tool to ensure consistent care delivery. The tool analyses blood glucose levels and provides consistent clinical direction to the midwives and dieticians who are managing the patient.

Since RBWH implemented their new model of care over 3500 patients have been seen with 74% remaining in the midwife clinic (not requiring specialist / endocrinology referral).
