Developing a Young Adult Health Centre at Mater Hospital Brisbane

Author: Sarah Brandt | Posted: 21/03/2016 | Views: 1219

Mater Hospital Brisbane identified young adult health as an area of unmet need. There was evidence of poor satisfaction levels with healthcare delivery, underuse of healthcare services, poor transitions and loss to follow-up and non-adherence.

To rectify the above issues, a dedicated Young Adult Health Centre that focussed on transitions of care was developed. It is colocated with tertiary paediatric & adult hospitals and offers services both in the inpatient and outpatient setting. Drug and alcohol withdrawal services, emotional heath and counselling care and education and vocational training are all components of the program.

Since the Young Adult Health Centre has opened outpatient appointments at the clinic have increased threefold, inpatient separations have nearly doubled and patient satisfaction scores have improved.
