Monash Health Develops a Mental Health Hospital in the Home (HITH) Program

Monash Mental Health experienced demand fluctuations for inpatient mental health beds that led to delays in the ED and absconding from the department. In response to the above issue, Monash increased medical and nursing staff to support intensive mental health care in the home.

Since developing their Mental Health HITH program, Monash reports an average readmission rate of 9.5% for their mental health HITH patients, well below their goal of 14%. They’ve also improved access to inpatient mental health care for patients who present to the ED.
