Eurobodalla records 35% drop in HITH patients receiving intravenous therapy for greater than 5 days

A review at Eurobodalla Health Service identified a high number of avoidable bed days for cellulitis diagnostic related groups. It was found insertion of peripherally inserted central catheters was problematic and ways of increasing HITH utilisation for these DRGs was investigated. There was also concern from pharmacy and nursing that clinical variation existed.

After an extensive review and audit of HITH patients, clinical nurses received training in PICC insertion, a protocol was developed and medical and nursing staff were educated on the benefits of PICCs.
