Westmead Hospital improve consultant involvement in decision making

Westmead Hospital are implementing “always ASC” or active supervision by consultants as a way to improve patient safety after hours.  By providing a more supportive learning environment and explicit behavioural expectations and norms for medical staff, consultants were involved in doubling the number of deteriorating patient decisions. A list of criteria when a senior consultant must be called promptly includes unplanned major medical interventions and medication or treatment errors.
