The surgical team at Logan Hospital decided to tackle the issue of LOS for specific DRGs and surgical wait lists, without additional real estate or bed stock. By introducing a 23 hour ward model of care and including ward staff in theatre scheduling meetings, they achieved some impressive results. Their relative stay index has dropped from nearly 100% to just below 80%, making them an exemplar and correspondingly their day of surgery admission rate has risen.
