Medication observation audit at Royal Brisbane decreases adverse events for patients

In July 2014 the team at Royal Brisbane conducted an observation study over 10 days in 2 wards with an aim to reduce medication incidents in IMS. They then followed up 3 months after to determine the sustainability of compliance to correct process.

There was a significant statistical improvement in providing direct feedback to individual nurses compared to ward feedback previously. ID checks increased from 57% to 98%, ADR checks increased from 45% to 93%, inappropriate dose omissions halved from 5% to 2.5% and wrong rate decreased from 17% to 0.1%.
