Waitakere DHB record huge improvements in paediatric emergency Time to Treatment and LOS

Waitakere DHB paediatric department were faced with increasing ED numbers and delays in initiating treatment following initial patient nursing assessment. Their initiative was simple but effective. The “Best Care Bundle” is a collection of evidence based documents that aim to standardise approach for certain conditions, provide a framework for Clinical Nurse Specialist and reduce process delays in ED.

Developed so far for Wheeze >1, Bronchiolitis, Croup and Dehydration the Best Care Bundle has resulted in an impressive 60% drop in mean time to treatment, 40% drop in mean length of stay and 30% increase in disposition.
