Members of the Patient Safety Improvement Group meet annually to share ideas and innovations that focus on improving the safety and quality of care within their health services. They monitor progress against the Health Roundtable Patient Safety Checklist and share information on the latest

This year forty Health Services from across Australia and New Zealand have subscribed to this important Patient Safety workshop.  With the introduction of pricing for quality, this year’s theme is focused on the major Hospital-Acquired Complications.

The key areas are:

Quantifying and benchmarking HACs for your service compared to peers
Highlighting opportunities for improvement
HACs by Departments – hot spots for action in your service
Sharing insights and innovations from other services to reduce HACs
Implementation of National Pricing for Quality.  What does that mean for health services?
IPHA risk adjustments for HACs
For services that are also members of the clinical costing group, the cost of HACs to your service will be available

Presenters:

The Roundtable is delighted to welcome Alex Psirides, intensivist and clinical lead for New Zealand’s deteriorating patient program to provide insights.  This five-year national program aims to reduce harm from failures to recognise or respond to acute physical deterioration for all adult inpatients.

The Roundtable’s HSMR expert Rohan Cattell will present the new look Patient Safety Reports and lead a session on how to investigate your mortality reports including recommendations for referral to the Morbidity and Mortality Committee.

James Downie, CEO of the Independent Pricing Authority, will provide updates on Pricing for Quality and development of risk adjustment and Chris O’Gorman, The Roundtable’s costing expert will present data on the costs of HACs.

Who Should Participate?  Your team should include an executive sponsor, senior clinical staff, redesign, and quality & safety personnel.  When teams of about 4 people attend the meeting and develop an agreed action plan, improvements are more likely to be implemented.
