The theme of the workshop is Safety and Quality at End of Life.  The healthcare that patients receive in their last years, months and weeks of their lives can help minimise the distress and grief associated with death and dying for the individual, and for the family, friends and carers. Many patients spend much of their last year of life going in and out of hospital and more than half of those who die each year do so in acute hospitals.

The purpose of this workshop is to:
- Discuss the provision of safe high-quality end of life care for patients
Share systems for delivering safe, timely and high – quality care in a way that is tailored to the population, resources and personnel available
-
Share innovations and experience to support practical application of processes and systems to ensure the provision of safe high-quality end of life care for patients

Delegates will share issues, practices and good ideas to develop action plans over the two days for implementation in their service.  The 2017 End of Life Care reports will be available on the website by the 26th April.

GUEST SPEAKERS

Kate Grundy, MBChB, FRACP, FAChPM

Kate is the Clinical Director of the Canterbury Integrated Palliative Care Services. She established the Christchurch Hospital Palliative Care Service in 1999 and the service now employs 2 Palliative Medicine Specialists, 3 specialist nurses (including one nurse practitioner) and 2 doctors in training. She also has a leadership role at the Nurse Maude Hospice which covers both the inpatient unit and a full community interdisciplinary team.

Her main academic interests are education (with a significant undergraduate commitment including teaching communication skills), non-cancer palliative care and Advance Care Planning.

Ensuring that everyone who works in healthcare has the necessary skills and understanding to provide quality care at the end of life is one of Kate’s main priorities. This is an important role for those who work in Palliative Care and requires active collaboration with departments, services and individuals on an ongoing basis.

Kate is the current Chair of the South Island Palliative Care Workstream, part of the South Island Alliance. Much of the activity of this group is focussed on ensuring equity of access to quality palliative care, wherever the person and their family/whanau is located.
