Raj Behal, MD, MPH, an internationally regarded
expert in the field of patient safety, joined Stanford in May 2014 as the chief
quality officer and associate dean for quality. Raj collaborates with clinicians to achieve
Stanford’s organizational vision to be among the nation’s leaders in quality,
patient safety and efficiency. Raj
developed the Lean Care Maps methods to analyse and reduce variations in care,
manage outcomes, reduce costs of care, and to identify program growth
opportunities.
Significant reductions in costs, hospital
length of stay and in inpatient mortality were achieved as a result of these
initiatives. Raj led implementation of the medical home model in primary care
practices to improve co-ordination of care for chronic diseases. He has created structured methods for
analysing and reducing sentinel events and mortality and worked with more than
40 US academic medical centre members to reduce mortality rates, improve
patient safety and to redesign quality infrastructure.
In
this workshop Raj will focus on six key themes from Stanford’s Clinical Excellence
Plan. He will describe
the plan and how Stanford is approaching each theme as well as share data and lessons
learnt.
