The Annual General Meeting on the 22nd of March 2013 at the Sydney Swissotel provides a review of key insights from projects from the previous calendar year.  There is also a Member Dinner on the evening of 21 March for those attending the meeting.


Our CEO workshop on the same day will focus this year on International Benchmarking with guest speakers Irene Thompson, CEO and Dr Rick Lofgren, Chief Clinical Officer of the University HealthSystem Consortium, a group of over 100 academic medical centres across the USA.  They will discuss emerging international trends and the ways UHC can assist our members.

We will also discuss the initial results of our new Global Innovation Group which involves collaboration with UHC as well as Birmingham NHS Trust, and Ottawa Hospital Research Institute.

This meeting is open to our Personal Members, who can bring each bring one guest from their organisation.  There is no additional fee for participation in this meeting.  However, members are responsible for their own travel and accommodation costs.

Guest Speaker:  Dr Rick Lofgren

As senior vice president and chief clinical officer, Dr. Lofgren leads
UHC’s extensive quality improvement resources, including the Faculty
Practice Solutions Center physician practice benchmarking and data
services; the Imperatives for Quality performance management
program, which provides proven best practices and improvement
collaboratives and supports national initiatives; and patient safety tools
and resources offered through the UHC Patient Safety Net, as well as
UHC’s role as a Patient Safety Organization designated by the Agency
for Healthcare Research and Quality.  
Dr. Lofgren is responsible for helping UHC members improve the quality, safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of their clinical services as they transform their health care delivery systems. His responsibilities include health care delivery redesign, operational efficiencies,performance improvement, and applied health services/quality research.
Dr. Lofgren has more than 30 years of experience in academic medicine and the health care industry, including directing operations for clinical services at a number of academic medical centers. He joined UHC in 2012 after serving as vice president for health care operations and chief clinical officer at UK HealthCare at the University of Kentucky.  Board certified in internal medicine, Dr. Lofgren earned a medical degree from the University of Michigan, completed his residency and
chief residency at the University of Minnesota, and received a master
of public health from the University of Minnesota School of Public
Health.
 
Irene Thompson, Chief Executive of UHC

As president and chief executive officer, Ms. Thompson is responsible for the overall operation of University Health System Consortium (UHC). Under her leadership, UHC’s membership has grown significantly to 118 academic medical centers, representing the majority of the nation’s nonprofit academic medical centers, and approximately 300 general hospital members. She oversees corporate
operations and performance, formulates and executes the organization’s strategy, and fosters member engagement to ensure that UHC delivers the highest value to its membership. Ms. Thompson represents UHC to the business and health care communities and the media on issues that demonstrate academic medical center leadership.  
Before joining UHC in 2007, Ms. Thompson served as president and chief executive officer of The University of Kansas Hospital Authority for 11 years. Under her leadership, the hospital experienced a dramatic turnaround in quality of care,
patient satisfaction, and revenue.
Ms.Thompson has also served as chief financial officer for an academic medical
center and as an audit partner for a major accounting firm specializing in healthcare services.

Ms. Thompson serves on the board of directors for Novation, the National Center for Healthcare Leadership, and the American Heart Association Midwest Affiliate, for which she serves as Chair of the Board and on national American Heart Association committees and task forces. She is currently a member of the Administrative Board for the Association of American Medical Colleges’ Council of
Teaching Hospitals and Health Systems (COTH) and the Executive Committee of the National Association of Public Hospitals and Health Systems (NAPH). Previously, she served as board chair for UHC and COTH. She was president of the Kansas City, Kansas, Chamber of Commerce and has served on numerous other
community not-for-profit boards.  
She holds a bachelor of science degree in business from State University of New York and has participated in master’s studies in organizational management at the University of Pennsylvania.
